Carlos PenaVega is a versatile performer with an impressive resume as a comedic and dramatic actor, and as a singer/songwriter in both English and Spanish. Carlos is also an experienced director and television host and presenter.
Carlos is best known as a member of the globally successful recording group Big Time Rush, and for his role as Carlos Garcia in the Nickelodeon television show of the same name (Big Time Rush.) Big Time Rush has released three full albums and two EPs achieving gold record status in the US. With Big Time Rush, Carlos has toured extensively across the US, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. The television series enjoyed Nickelodeon’s highest live-action premiere ratings ever. After Big Time Rush (TV) ended, Carlos returned to Nickelodeon as the host of Nickelodeon’s 2014 game show Webheads. He competed and finished in fourth place on ABC's Dancing With The Stars, paired with pro Witney Carson. Carlos most recently starred as Kenickie in FOX TV's January 2016 Emmy Award winning live television production of GREASE:LIVE!
Carlos’ first major television role was on the NBC series E.R. in 2004. He has guest starred on numerous other shows since then, including Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Judging Amy, Summerland, How to Rock, and Marvin Marvin, and has appeared on many award shows and specials, including the Kids Choice Awards, the 2014 Latin Grammy Awards, the HALO Awards, The Teen Choice Awards, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Carlos made his theatrical debut in the indie film Little Birds in 2011. Carlos was later tapped to star alongside George Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei in Spare Parts, which was released in January 2015. Carlos also has a role in the upcoming film Killing Hasselsoff, and was the voice of William in the animated feature Pixies.
In addition to starring on the show, Carlos directed an episode of Big Time Rush in 2013 (Big Time Tour Bus.) He also produced and directed the lyric video for Rachel Crow’s Mean Girls. As a solo musician, Carlos released his first solo single, Eléctrico, on February 4, 2014 as PenaVega. Carlos has often said he hopes to perform on Broadway one day as well. Carlos also has many songwriting credits to his name.
Carlos was born as Carlos Pena Jr. in Columbia, Missouri. His mother is from the Dominican Republic; his father is Spanish and Venezuelan. When he was seven, his family moved to Weston, Florida, where he attended the Sagemont Upper School and American Heritage School. Carlos first discovered his love for performing when he was 12. "It all started with singing." he said. That led him to musical theater and much more. When he was 13, he booked his first national commercial for the "Super Soaker" water gun. He appeared in the MTV series Making Menudo in 2007. After high school, Carlos went to the Boston Conservatory on scholarship, but moved to Los Angeles when he landed Big Time Rush.
Carlos has many talents. He plays guitar, piano, and ukulele, he is a certified rescue scuba diver, and holds a black belt in Taekwondo. He has many passions as well, from his love of sour candy to his addiction to cruising! He also loves photography, and even owns a drone he loves to use for aerial photography. Carlos is most at home in the water, and can usually be found there when he's not working.
Carlos married actress Alexa Vega in 2014. The couple merged their last names and now both go by the surname PenaVega. The PenaVegas have several pets, including a beautiful German Shepard named Sydney, a Goldendoodle named Sasha Bear, and a Bengal cat named Zero.
